Workshop

INTERNATIONAL IBRO GLIAL WORKSHOP:

FIRST DAY, Friday, December 13, 2013-

Arrival at the Luis Munoz International Airport and housing at the Caribe HILTON hotel, San Juan.

SECOND DAY, Saturday, December 14-
9:00 AM-6:00 PM (The laboratory settings)

Dr. Zorec group and the group of glial investigators from Puerto Rico (Universidad Central del Caribe (UCC), Interamerican University (IAU) and University of  Puerto Rico(UPR)) will install the technique at the Universidad Central del Caribe in Bayamon: organizing special cell cultures, installation of equipment, amplifiers, acquisition systems for measuring membrane capacitance.

THIRD DAY, Monday, December 16-
9:00 AM-noon (workshop preparations)

The workshop preparations and laboratory settings will be further processed at UCC. During these preparations the electrophysiology rigs for several different tissues and single cells will be adjusted. Preparation of freshly isolated astrocytes, Müller cells and cultures of microglia and astrocytes for Membrane capacitance techniques to study regulated exocytosis (based on the Dr. Robert Zorec group publication in Nature Protocols  2013).

12:00-1:00 PM (lunch and one seminar)

Dr. Dmitri Rusakov will give his seminar entitled: “Dissecting astroglial machinery using fluorescence life-time imaging and realistic biophysical models”.

1:00 PM-5:00 PM (workshop settings)

During this time the electrophysiology rigs for (i) single isolated cells, (ii) cell cultures, (iii) brain slices and whole retina mounts to measure high-resolution membrane capacitance and first experiments will be performed to visualize single fusion events in glial cells.

FOURTH DAY, Tuesday, December 17-
9:00 AM-6:00 PM (workshop final preparations)

During this day the electrophysiology setups and technical procedures will be finalized to make successful demonstrations in single isolated cells, cell cultures, brain slices and whole retina mounts to visualize single fusion events and vesicular release from glial cells.

During the afternoon sessions of the Caribe-GLIA-3 Symposium, December 18th and 19th, there will be demonstrations of installed technique from 1:00 PM till 5:00 PM.
